*Ultra-bright early galaxies may be less common than we think
Astronomers have discovered that one of the brightest galaxies in the distant universe isn’t so far away after all. The findings have profound implications for models of how galaxies formed when the universe was in its infancy.
*Early opaque universe linked to relatively few galaxies
Astronomers have discovered that the most opaque place in the universe 12 and a half billion years ago -- contained relatively little matter. The new findings may eventually shed light on another phase in cosmic history.
*Mysterious interstellar rogue planet could be a brown dwarf
Astronomers have discovered a mysterious object in interstellar space which appears to be right at the boundary between a giant planet and brown dwarf. The object is more than a dozen times more massive than Jupiter and has a surprisingly strong magnetic signature.
*Gilmour Space achieves record thrust in hybrid rocket engine test
Gold Coast based space systems start up Gilmour Space Technologies, has conducted its most powerful orbital engine test so far – achieving 80 kilonewtons or 18,000 pounds of thrust during a 17 second burn of its experimental hybrid rocket engine.

*Earth’s ingredients are fairly typical
A new study looking at material around distant stars suggests Earth’s ingredients are fairly typical. The findings are based on spectroscopic observations of 18 different planetary systems around white dwarfs up to 456 light years away.
*Astronomers blown away by historic stellar blast
Astronomers have used light echoes to study a 170 year old stellar eruption which briefly produced the second brightest star in Earth’s skies – out shone only by the Sun. The spectacular explosion was created by a nearby binary star system known as Eta Carinae.
